From humble beginnings to
award-winning safari experiences

The Woodbury Collection represents three unforgettable safari destinations on the malaria-free Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. These properties have been developed by the Gush Family, whose story on this land reaches back to the 1850s. A century and a half later, the bold decision was made to convert Woodbury from traditional agriculture and livestock into ecotourism by co-founding Amakhala Game Reserve.

Today, Woodbury welcomes guests from around the world to enjoy family hospitality and explore a landscape that truly feels like it was destined to showcase the natural splendour of the Eastern Cape bushveld. Our trademarks are the spectacular views over the sweeping Bushman’s River valley and a landscape in which the wildlife of a bygone era have been restored. This is the home of the lion and elephant once more. This is Woodbury.

"Fantastic Safari experience Woodbury Lodge Amakhala"

Woodbury Lodge was an amazing experience for our family and friends. Our guide was fantastic, very knowledgable and respectful of the animals. We saw so much on our drives with him, it was outstanding. Woodbury went way above our expectations on all we saw and the wonderful setting, surroundings and accommodations all beautiful. The staff at Woodbury lodge are a real credit to them.

Thoroughly recommend Woodbury Lodge on all counts. Animals, our guide, lodges (with your own viewing deck) drives with wonderful pit stops – coffee in the mornings and wine in the evenings, fantastic relaxation area with pool and viewing decks, campfire in the evenings, plentiful food and drinks and a wonderful welcome upon arrival. A truly magical experience.

"Absolutely amazing"

We visited for 4 nights with friends. This was an amazing experience and we saw so many animals. Our guide, Lenny, was great. We went out early morning after a hot drink and then came back for breakfast which you have with the other guests on one table. It was good being able to talk with others from different countries and share our stories. Then had a break by the pool. Had lunch then off on afternoon safari. Once back dinner is ready. The food were is amazing and I loved the fact that the guides and staff eat with you. The rooms were so lovely and the staff so friendly. I cannot fault anything about these lodges and the whole safari is one of the best holidays I have had.

"Everything we hoped for and more"

This was a great experience. The rooms were so beautiful and private. Great showers and bathrooms. But most of all the Safari experience was fabulous. Seeing the animals close up was so memorable. The guide was so knowledgeable and fun to be with. The group meals were enjoyable and such a nice touch as we met people from all over the world. We also liked that the lodge was small and intimate and we felt we got great personal service. Great lifelong memory.

Amakhala Game Reserve

The story of Amakhala Game Reserve is steeped in history. From early hunter gatherers, to cattle herders and commercial farmers, the land has seen an ebb and flow of human footprints. But the sweeping grasslands, dune forests and soaring escarpments have retained an indelible wildness. It’s no wonder the first dinosaur bones in the Southern Hemisphere were discovered here. This landscape is prehistoric.

Today, Amakhala is a wildlife haven spanning over 9000 hectares. A spectacular variety of fauna and flora call this place home, including the Big Five and nearly 250 species of birds. Through multi-generational collaboration between neighbours and a commitment to conservation and community, Amakhala strives to be a safari destination that will truly leave its mark. This is the African bush like you’ve never seen it before.
