Game Drives

One of the cornerstones of the Woodbury Collection is the unforgettable safaris experience on Amakhala Game Reserve. Our open-air land cruisers provide the perfect opportunity to view Amakhala’s incredible diversity of wildlife and explore the reserve’s varied landscapes.

Follow the meandering Bushman’s River in the footsteps of elephants, traverse the open savanna in search of big cats or wend your way through the thickets and dune forest surrounded by a myriad of bird calls. Morning coffee breaks are often taken in the company of giraffe, while in the evenings your guide will choose the perfect spot to have sundowners overlooking the magnificent Woodbury basin.

Horseback Safaris

Woodbury Horse Trails offer an immersive experience in the Eastern Cape bushveld. Follow in the footsteps of early explorers traveling on horseback through the region, encountering indigenous wildlife around every corner and navigating rugged terrain with the aid of their trusty steeds. As one such traveler called it:

“…the most beautiful division in the whole district; well-wooded and watered, with a great depth of good soil, and well clothed with grass.”

Trails are conducted on the working cattle farms of Beacon Hill and Brentwood which are owned by the Gush family along with the Woodbury safari properties. In coexistence with livestock, these historical farms are also the home to wildlife such as giraffe, Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest, warthog, mountain reedbuck and impala.

A Deep Rooted Safari Experience

The story of Woodbury begins with the Gush Family’s first farming endeavours in the area dating back to the 1850s. Livestock and agriculture were the pursuits of the day, yet the landscape’s wildness remained. Over a century and a half later, the brave decision was taken to convert Woodbury into a pioneering ecotourism project as part of the establishment of Amakhala Game Reserve.

Today, the Woodbury Collection represents three unforgettable safari destinations in the heart of the Eastern Cape bushveld of South Africa. Though each has its own unique charm, all three properties share a common thread of warm hospitality, comfort and the opportunity to be guided on an incredible safari experience. Spectacular views over the sweeping Bushman’s River valley are a quintessential aspect of our guests’ stay, taking in a landscape in which the wildlife of a bygone era has been restored. This is the home of the lion and elephant once more. This is Woodbury.

Walking Safaris

Step into nature in its purest form. Embarking on a thrilling walking safari is a sure way to truly appreciate the natural world, from the smallest insect to the most towering tree. Non-Big 5 walks are conducted by our in-house guides in areas without dangerous game, while Big 5 walks can be arranged with FGASA qualified trails guide Riaan Brand on Amakhala Game Reserve.

Put on a pair of comfortable shoes, a sunhat, grab your camera or binos and let us guide you through some of the lesser viewed scenic spots on the reserve and introduce you to the creatures that sometimes get missed while on a game viewer. A walking safari is the very best way to slow down and immerse yourself in the African veld.
