a historical safari escape: Woodbury Lodge

Set against a cliff above the spectacular Bushman’s River valley, Woodbury Lodge
is an unforgettable safari experience.

The pioneer of the Woodbury Collection, Woodbury Lodge was opened in 1999 as one of the first accommodation options on Amakhala Game Reserve.

Originally envisioned as a tented camp on the banks of the Bushman’s River,  the views from the ridgeline to the north-east proved too appealing, and the decision was made to build Woodbury Lodge into the thicketed and boulder-strewn slopes above the river basin.

Employing farm staff and their own skills, the partnership of Richard and Giles Gush oversaw the construction of three thatched sleeping lodges and a kitchen-dining room. Later that year, the signing of the Amakhala constitution took place on the deck at Woodbury Lodge on 29 October 1999.

Today, guests are accommodated in seven elegantly furnished stone–and–thatch sleeping lodges that feature en-suite bathrooms with heated floors, air conditioning and private decks overlooking the Woodbury plains.

Two family lodges with adjoining rooms sleep up to four guests each. Each lodge is connected by stone pathways to a central dining area and lounge with access to a bar, two swimming pools and spectacular viewing decks.

Alongside the growth of Amakhala Game Reserve, Woodbury Lodge has developed into a prestigious safari lodge that offers an ideal combination of comfort and that quintessential safari feel. Two game drives per day on this magnificent wildlife reserve are included in each booking, conducted by passionate and knowledgeable safari guides.

While out on drive, enjoy morning coffee stops in the company of giraffe, or sundowners with a breath-taking view from the “Big Hoek” escarpment. On returning to the lodge, our staff are on hand to cater to your every need, providing delicious South African cuisine and heartfelt hospitality. In the evenings, sip local wines round the campfire and swap stories of the day’s adventures. This is a safari experience to remember.

"Enchanting!"

We had an amazing time at Woodbury. You feel so comfortable and welcomed and they go above with the little details. We had one very rainy and windy night but it made for an exciting experience in the tent. They had a cozy fire to warm up to, yummy food and beautiful views. Our guide Nico was so perceptive, and made you appreciate every piece of wildlife from the plants to the birds to the lions. We will miss him, and the entire team, they are what make the visit special. And most importantly, it was SO FUN!
